Superstition of the Week - Candles

CANDLES

  • Egyptians used candles to encourage precognitive dreams.
  • Farmers in medieval times would protect their flocks from witches by surrounding them with candles that had been blessed by priests.
  • If you blow out all your candles on your birthday cake with one puff, your wish will come true.
  • If a candle was hard to light it was thought to be a sign a storm was coming.
  • It was believed if a candle flame develops a bluish hue, there would soon be a death in the family.
  • At one time it was common to bury a candle with the decease to help light their way to the other side.
